Course Requirements for the Master of Library Science

Students may enter the Library Science Master's program with any undergraduate major. For course descriptions, click here. Some courses are offered only during certain terms (noted below), not every semester.

Required Courses

  • LIB 5010: Collection Development and Management (3) (Fall only)
  • LIB 5020: Information Sources and Services (3) (Summer only)
  • LIB 5030: Organization of Information (3) (Spring only)
  • LIB 5042: Strategic Administration of Library Resources and Services (3) (Summer only)
  • LIB 5050: Technology and Libraries: Tools, Resources, and Issues (3) (Summer only)
  • LIB 5060: Building Connections Through Community and Culture (3) (Summer only)
  • LIB 5070: Integrating Literature and Media into Instruction (3) (Spring only)
  • LIB 5080: Collaborative Media Program Planning and Evaluation (3)
  • LIB 5195: Critical Issues in Literature and Media (3) (Fall only)
  • LIB 5525: Product of Learning (3)
  • LIB 5900: Internship/Practicum OR LIB 5910 Applications of Librarianship Standards (3) (must be completed in a school media center or in a combination of school media center and public library. Interns must be under the supervision of a licensed media coordinator and/or professional public librarian.)
  • RES 5000: Research Methods (3)

M Level Licensure Option

Those students who do not have a teaching license and wish to pursue a career in school librarianship are required to complete 12 additional hours of coursework to receive their M Level Licensure, which will allow them to teach in K-12 schools. ITC Add-On Licensure Option

Instructional Technology/Computers (ITC) offers an add-on licensure option for those students working toward their Masters of Library Science (MLS). Those students who wish to receive the Technology Facilitator Endorsement (079) are required to take 18 additional hours of coursework from the ITC online program. Those students who are working toward ITC Add-On Licensure are allowed to substitute one ITC course for LIB 5050 Technology and Libraries: Tools, Resources, and Issues (3).
